GIB Key Puller

The Puller

I originally built a GIB Key puller, using a modification of an available design. I had to use 1" bar stock instead of the 1-1/2" specified. This did not work. It twisted over the key whenever I started applying serious pressure to it.

Next I built another puller of my own design. I used a 3/4" piece of 6" round stock with a two inch hole in its center. I wore out a couple of grinding stones for my die grinder before learning that my rusty old half-round file removed the material faster. The die grinder was more fun though. I then used a reciprocating saw to cut from the center to the perimeter. It was slow, but with some cutting fluid this worked. I drilled four holes through the plate for 1/2" NC threads. Two inch bolts through these holes pulled the key out in less than a minute. It's amazing what the proper tool will do.
